Job Overview/Summary

The IRC in New Jersey seeks an English Education Facilitator to assist with English Language Training (ELT), Cultural Orientation (CO), Job Readiness Training (JRT) and Digital Literacy to support its education programs for refugees and other immigrants. Under the supervision of the Adult Education Supervisor, instructor will provide humanitarian entrants with contextualized instruction that promotes English language skills needed to obtain and retain employment and achieve self-sufficiency. Instructor is expected to work independently and effectively engage students to ensure high retention rates. They must also ensure client data is collected and managed to effectively report on grant-funded programs.

Hours: 37.5 per week.

Breakdown of weekly hours: 20 hrs. teaching, 10 hrs. lesson planning, 5 hrs. administrative work, 2 hrs. team meetings.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provide content-based English language instruction for classes meeting 2 times per week in ELT program.
  • Provide strength-based, client-centered instruction for classes in JRT, CO, and Digital Literacy programs.
  • Develop and implement engaging lesson plans that assist students in meeting their goals and offer a variety of instructional methods adapted to diverse learning styles.
  • Incorporate job readiness and technology into ESL classroom instruction.
  • Design and administer student assessment tools that gauge student learning and monitor achievement of performance outcomes.
  • Create a welcoming environment that fosters community and learning among program participants.
  • Submit weekly lesson plans and/or bi-weekly unit plans that address material to be covered in class.
  • Assist with registration, intake, and pre- and post-testing as needed
  • Monitor and track student participation in program.
  • Assist with reporting requirements as needed
  • Attend regular meetings with the program coordinator.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

  • University degree, plus at least 1 year of Experience teaching adult English language learners (ELLs).
  • TESOL degree/certificate preferred.
  • Experience living in a country outside of the U.S. highly desired.
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory and student-centered teaching strategies.
  • Comfort working with refugees and immigrants from a variety of backgrounds, including those with limited formal education and/or literacy skills.
  • Strong culturally responsive interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience working with interpreters.
  • Experience using Zoom or online learning platforms.
  • Detail oriented and organized.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Language Skills:

  • English fluency required, fluency in another language strongly preferred

Working Environment:

  • Standard office work environment.
  • Hybrid- Some remote work optional for virtual classes.

Compensation: Posted pay ranges apply to US-based candidates. Ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job type, internal equity, and budget. Exact offers are calibrated by work location, individual candidate experience and skills relative to the defined job requirements.
