Position Summary
The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.

The Museum's Institute for Comparative Genomics (ICG) is seeking a full-time Research Assistant to handle day-to-day responsibilities and aid in the management of a NSF-funded ancient biomolecules laboratory. The Research Assistant manages the laboratory and equipment, maintains operating procedures, validates methodologies and assists lab users. They are also responsible for maintaining the laboratory, updating protocols and contributing to teaching materials.

Job duties include:
  • Manage the ancient biomolecules laboratory, including, but not limited to, equipment maintenance, stocking of laboratory supplies and reagents and maintaining a clean-room environment.
  • Establish, effectuate and supervise laboratory operating procedures.
  • Optimize laboratory protocols, specifically for degraded DNA and proteins.
  • Train and assist users in ancient DNA and paleoproteomic laboratory procedures.
  • Guide users in selecting the proper methodology for degraded DNA work.
  • Troubleshoot protocols, manage the lab calendar and coordinate with researchers/staff.
  • Serve on the user research committee to evaluate projects applying for lab use.

The expected salary range for the Research Assistant is $50,000/annual - $54,000/annual. This position is overtime-eligible and the AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in biology or a related field.
  • Experience with nucleic acid isolation, specifically from degraded samples, and downstream techniques.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in biology or a related field, or significant related work experience.
  • C-14 FDNY certification.
Physical Demands
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to move about the Museum campus.
  • Positioning/change of positioning: Must be able to frequently position oneself/body to accomplish job duties.
    • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling.
    • Climbing: Ascending or descending physical structures.
