"It's an awesome responsibility," says Thomas Stewart of his responsibilities as Managing Partner. "I'm a steward for a division of the number one sales force in the country, and I feel very privileged. It's an attainment of a goal I've had for years." Tom Stewart knew this was the career and the company for him from the start. Freshly armed with a bachelor's degree in business from Marist College, he signed his first contract with Northwestern Mutual, and then - Albany General Agent, Jim Nemec, CLU, ChFC, in 1992. He quickly took on management responsibilities, as director of development, then field director. "From day one, I wanted to do exactly what Jim was doing," Tom explains. "Because I wanted to go into the insurance business when I came out of school, I checked out the various options. I found Northwestern to be a company of such high integrity, product performance and financial strength, that I knew it was the one for me." When Nemec left the office to take a corporate office vice presidency, Milt Hall, CLU, took over the office, and Stewart's responsibilities and achievements grew. He earned distinction as a top 20 field directors, as well as an M.B.A. from the State University of New York. His family grew as well, with Thomas Jr., coming on the scene during that time. That career path included being named agency director in Buffalo in 1999. "That position was a great way to learn the job under the guidance of experts in the corporate office," he said. "I was also able to develop relationships with the financial representatives and office staff, so I'm not taking this on as an unknown entity. And I've received a lot of support from industry specialists in our region. It was the best thing I could have done to prepare for the challenge of building the Buffalo marketplace up." Tom's plans for the network office include cultivating existing talent and bringing in new talent. He explains, "We need to grow as an organization by bringing in additional productive people. The systems are in place, and the existing representatives are committed to helping this office grow. I'm also going to focus on adding value for the existing representatives' clients and their careers - to help them increase market penetration in our territory, and implement the Network in Western New York. I believe that such a focus on talent is the key to growth overall," adds Stewart. "The rate of change in our industry has been moving at light speed. Many companies like ours have decreased emphasis on their agent force, and increased use of other channels, when they got into the financial services arena. But Northwestern Mutual has continued to put its money and its emphasis on the financial representative distribution system. They back us 110 percent." An Opportunity to Succeed The goal is not to simply sell products, but to discover clients' needs and help to meet them. That means taking the time to understand each person's financial situation, values and goals. This career offers:
